Awami League finalises candidates for 240 seats

The Awami League has announced final candidates for 240 seats for contesting the 11th parliamentary election scheduled for December 30.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader handed over the final letters approving candidacies to party leaders at the Awami League President’s political office in Dhanmondi on Friday morning.

The ruling party also approved the ‘boat symbol’ for 16 candidates from allied parties.

Among them, five constituencies were finalised for Workers' Party, three for Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB), three for Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu), two for Jatiya Party (Manju), two for Bangladesh Tariqat Federation and one for Ambia-led JSD.

Quader said that 55 to 60 seats will be given to the alliance partners. HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party (JP) may get 40 to 42 seats, he also indicated.

Jatiya Party candidates, however, will run under their ‘plough’ symbol in the December 30 general election.

Awami League also declared its single candidates for 17 constituencies where it gave nominations to more than one candidate earlier.

Among those, Awami League former general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam was finalised for Kishoreganj-1 constituency while Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury for Rangpur-6.
